English for Fun Program at Caritas
Family Integrated Service Centre, Shaukiwan
July to December 2021
Background
We became aware of the various struggles of deprived families in Hong Kong when we participated in a charitable project organised by the Caritas Family Integrated Service Centre in Tsuen Wan in 2012. Since then, we have learned more about the social and emotional issues these families were struggling with and came to know some social workers in various family centres.
During the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic from November 2020 through most of 2021, we offered to teach various English for Fun programs at the Caritas Family Integrated Service Centre in Shaukiwan with the support of the supervisor and social workers at the centre.
From July to August, a summer program of videos, interactive games, and arts and crafts for more than eighty special needs children aged 5-8 took place over six sessions. Young volunteers also joined to help with these fun learning classes conducted in English.
A 10-week program was conducted at the Centre for a small group of P3-P6 students with storytelling and games from September to December.
